Inspired by the lush landscape just outside the windows (which were salvaged from an old train depot!), the homeowner of this 105-year-old Victorian farmhouse filled the dining room with rustic wood elements and pops of green. The Beech wishbone chairs, which are lacquered in an apple green, pop against the large antique hutch that stores the homeowner's collection of copper Moscow mule mugs and green and white china. A pale pink Oriental rug with subtle hints of sky blue and chartreuse rounds out the mix.
DO direct traffic away from work areas. A common problem suffered by small kitchens is too many circulation routes, which, in turn, disrupts the primary activity areas, such as the sink, stovetop, and dishwasher. And with all that overly used space in the kitchen, the dining room suffers from lack of use. Combining the kitchen and the dining rooms into one spacious family room/kitchen is a much better choice for a formal lifestyle. Plus, by opening up the kitchen to the dining room, you can easily direct traffic away from high traffic areas in the kitchen, and maximize efficiency.

However, the major trick was getting it out of the house! Once the wall was gone it fit well through the opening, but on the way out of the house there was only centimeters of space to fit it through our double doors. Let’s just say there were a lot of moments of shear panic as I watched 5 men man-handle the hot tub out of the house without assistance from machinery.

A wooden scroll with inscribed sentiment hanging on a thick burlap string is a focal point in this designer’s dream room. Two candlestick lamps in contrasting colors on an unfinished bread table completes the sleek sophisticated look, along with a rustic grocery store scale cloaked in greenery, a metal crate holding gourds and sprigs of fresh herbs.

The open plan of this luxury dining room keeps the space bright and undeniably roomy. The polished marble flooring, white walls and numerous surrounding floor to ceiling windows, and brightly lit tray ceiling also all help with keeping the dining room feeling spacious. The choice of a long dark wood dining table and faux alligator skin upholstered chairs are also nice touches.

Craft a beautiful dining space with the Camelia 5 Piece Pub set. A pedestal style base on the table includes a spacious shelf and curvaceous leg supports that add visual interest. A beveled glass table top is round in shape, providing plenty of room for dining and entertaining and staying safe without sharp corners. Accompanied are four upholstered pub chairs. Upholstered seat and seat backs offer comfort and repose, while the upholstery brings a formal look and feel to the ensemble. The Camelia 5 Piece Table & Chair Set is perfect for a formal or casual dining space in your home.

Boxy shapes and tin-pan metals make up the theme of this eating area masterpiece. It doubles as a game room and triples as a simple gathering place to plan family events. The repurposed stove vent overhead lighting and canned greenery, with mismatched bench seating and cross back chairs surrounding a long bench table make this country-style room a unique display.
Oinks, clucks, and moos give this delicately stressed white-washed plaque a hefty desire to find itself in the center of a country-themed kitchen. Placed against a wooden fresco caged bird painting and standing next to a spiny bird’s nest floral design holding two beautiful pale blue robin eggs, the plaque is an absolute statement in the cycle of nature.
There are also a number of health and wellness related benefits that accompany opening up a kitchen into a dining room. For example, open concept kitchens generally create more natural light in the home, which helps to improve mood and productivity. Plus, the lack of walls will help facilitate more social interaction between family members, which can lead to better communication and relationships in the home.

This particular example has a more traditional look to it and employs an open layout, sharing its space with the adjacent kitchen. The use of French cabinet doors really opens up the room and puts on display the owner’s collection of fine porcelain. Smart use of a coffered ceiling and industrial chandelier rounds out the room’s aesthetic quite well.
Wow I love this transformation!! Your dining room is beautiful and you have such a great story behind it. My husband and I bought a log cabin-style home (our first home!) and we have pine boards just like yours throughout our house. Are you glad you painted them white? Would you recommend doing that throughout the house and leaving the pine trim in it’s original state? Do you mind sharing which white paint you chose?

Another thing to think about is eliminating or relocating doorways that currently disrupt circulation. If you absolutely have to have multiple doorways in the kitchen, try to group them in one area to confine circulation to one or two routes. Another great rule of thumb to follow: Rooms that aren’t related to the kitchen shouldn’t connect to the kitchen.

For a similar reason, opening up a kitchen to a dining room is also a great option for homeowners who enjoy entertaining. From dinners to parties to informal gatherings with friends, open concept kitchen/dining rooms lend themselves especially well to conversation. There are no awkward walls and doorways to block the view of other party goers, and the open concept facilitates easier traffic patterns with large groups as well. Not to mention, many open concept kitchen remodels include islands or bar-style countertops, which are great for appetizers and buffet-style dining.
